Middle School Summer Reading

Summer is a great time for students to enhance their skills in literacy. Students who continue to read throughout the summer actually make gains in their reading ability.

The Battle of the Books list has been published! We are so excited to share these titles with our rising Middle School families. Each Middle School student is provided the opportunity to participate in a friendly competition to showcase their knowledge of current children’s literature.

The purpose of this reading enrichment program is to encourage recreational reading, offer a variety of types of literature, increase familiarity with different authors, and share books through written and oral expression. The challenge is for students to read as many of the fifteen books as possible by March 2020.

Click to download the 2019-2020 Battle Official Title/Author List. These books are Florida Sunshine State Award Books, selected by a panel of media specialists throughout the state. They represent a variety of multi-cultural backgrounds, as well as, a range of reading levels. Several of these are the first book in a series, so if your child really enjoys a book, I encourage him/her to look into other books by that author.

In the spring, a Qualifying Test on the 15 books will be given to all participating students. The top four scorers in each class will represent their class in the school’s Battle. Middle School classes, as well as, the parents of the contestants, will be invited to attend the Battle. The winning classroom will attend a district Battle with other charter schools. All students who read the books are winners; however, for having read great children’s literature!
